Oilers VS Flames tonight..Flames look like they're about to go down in flames (damn I'm good), and tonight I dont see they're fortunes changing..although I do think they will make it a close game just because the Oilers are so damn inconsistant.
Here's what I think..
I think the Oilers are a top six bruiser/grinder/finisher (I guess that's a power forward) like lucic, or iginla..and another top four defenceman with a bit of a mean streak (thinking a poor mans Chris Pronger from his heyday) away from seriously competing for a conference final..
Right now they remind me of the Blackhawks in the year they JUST ABOUT made the playoffs..(think four years ago)..but they migh sneak in depending on the consistency of RNH, Hall, and Eberle..we already know what we're going to get the rest of the season from Smyth, Horcoff, Gilbert, and Jones..
Hemsky and Gagner are still question marks for me..who knows how they're gonna do the rest of this season, Gagner still hasn't scored but looks on the verge of breaking out..but this has become the norm for him every season, not being able to put a consistant offensive stretch together..
Hemsky is slowly heating up, but in the past few years I've seen him do the same only to have it all be derailed by injuries.
Lets hope this team can stay healthy.
I Predicted Oilers to beat the Jackets last night 5-2 (yeah I know I didnt post it here)..they ended up winning 6-3, tonight I predict Oilers 5-4 over the flames.

Very nice win for Edmonton
Now that was nice..I liked what I saw tonight.. I mean afternoon-early evening..
A USA thanksgiving afternoon special gave us Oilers vs Wild..17 straight times the Wild had defeated the Oil in the Excel Energy Center but tonight..or today, this afternooon..whatever, this game the Oilers took control from the opening shift to the last shift with Eberle unselfishly dishing Ryan Nugent Hopkins a nice feed for the empty netter to secure a victory..nice..5-2 Edmonton..
I'm currently listening to "theteam1260" for the postgame..normally I tune in on ched 630 but this is different..this was an afternoon game, therefore I will listen in on theteam, I normally prefer that station anyways..it's kinda found another home in my household..
Goodtimes...soon the Jets are at it..so this blog is short..doesnt matter..all that matters is the Oilers win, they are now 3-0 in teams that are in first place in western standings..beating the Predators, Wild, and Hawks...so that means they are not only winning against average-bad teams, but against the league's top teams..
Magnus Paajarvi..not sure what's going on here..why was he in the pressbox again?? Is he that important to the team right now that he has to be here?? In the future..yeah, sure, I see him in the top six..he's got world class speed..good hockey sense both in offense and defence..but his confidence to drive the net just doesnt seem there right now..he's averaging about 3-4 shifts a period..not enough to get consistently offensively involved..
Solution?
Send him to the minors..And what's wrong with that? He'll get tons of ice time, score some points..it'll do him alot better than being stuck on the fourth line playing no specialty teams..he's only 21 years old, there is no rush for him to be here in the NHL right now..if this team didn't have Eberle, Hall, RNH, Gagner, Hemsky, Horcoff, and Smyth here..then yeah, Paajarvi would get top ice time..on a team like Nashville where most of their offensive players would be no more than 3rd liners on top tier teams..Paajarvi would be a top offensive icetime player..
Next year, or the year after..Horcoff, Smyth, Belanger (if he's still here) will all be a little older..soon they will get less ice time..Paajarvi can then step in and fill that role...
Oilers win..times are good..prospects are turning out..it's fun to watch this team play.

Hall, Hemsky, Eberle, Dubnyk impress..Oilers get a point.
Just finished watching the Oilers lose yet another game, make that six in a row..difference was this time the score wasn't as lopsided as some of the other recent offerings.
Tonight was exciting, this was exciting last place hockey..Lets face it, we all know the Oilers are not gonna win too many games this season, I can see them putting together a few winning stretches later on in the season.
I also predict for Taylor Hall to start finding his groove more as the season progresses, perhaps a similar to Steven Stamkos's first NHL season where he was a healthy scratch a few times only to end up red hot in the last third of the season and ending up with 23 goals, what does he have this year? Last I heard he just scored his second hat-trick of the season, leads the league with 35 points in less than 20 games..Not too shabby..this in only his third NHL season.
Now I'm not saying that Hall is the next Stamkos, but this kind of hockey if pretty normal for first overall draft picks, besides Sid the Kid and Ovie first overall picks usually dont blow up any scoresheets..lets go back and do a little history shall we?

His best season was in 03/04 when he scored 40 points in 82 games..never played 500 games in the NHL scoring less than 200 points..just goes to show that 1st overall picks are never guaranteed future Hall Of Famers...the second and third overall picks that year were the Sedin twins, we all know how long it took them to become stars in the NHL...but looking at their past few seasons and it's clear that slow starts in their NHL careers didn't impact their long term success..

Very respectable rookie numbers, similar to the pace Taylor Hall is on right now..
Rick Nash more than doubled his goals totals in his second season by scoring 41 goals without offensive help from teammates..Nash has gone on to score 30 or more goals five times so far in his young NHL career.

Rookie Stats: 81-11-20-31
Staal only scored 11 goals in his rookie campaign but fallowed it up with 100 points in his sophomore year (two years later due to NHL Lockout season). What's also inspiring is that Hall managed to outscore Staal in every year of junior hockey..I have to add though that Hall did play for a very stacked Windsor Spitfires team, still is interesting to compare stats though..
I could go on and on and on..and as I mentioned earlier..look at Steven Stamkos, his first season was hardly an indication that we would score at a goal a game pace this season..if he stays healthy I have a feeling he'll end up with over 70 goals, who was the last man to reach 70 or more goals? Brett Hull? From the mid 90's??
Anyways..just rambling now...back to tonights game..
I think everyone looked pretty solid, however Tom Gilbert doesn't look right this season, terrible giveaways that'd you'd barely accept from even a rookie NHL'er...not sure what's gonna happen to him and his future in Edmonton...
Hemsky was flying tonight, as I was watching the game listening to the sportsnet commentators talk about how coach Renney gave Hemsky yesterday's practice off just to rest, I was thinking.."he's obviously the type of player that doesn't really need to be told what to do, he's the type who succeeds best when he makes plays based on his own judgement not by something the coach drew out for him on some chalk board during practice, but he'll figure it out as the games go on..he's his own boss out there" Seriously, every once in a while I see extreme greatness in his play, similar to how you would see Crosby or Ovechkin just taking over a game...if if somehow he could just do it on a more consistent level..maybe the coach should just let him play his game and not try teaching X's and O's to someone who's got the whole Alphabet already figured out..
Eberle and Hall both looked real good tonight and each came away with a point..Whitney continues to add on to his league leading assists by a defenceman..lets see how long that'll last..I have a feeling he might just end up with over 50 points this year...a little off my early season predictions..
